When the harsh storms of winter descend upon western Ireland, the locals stay indoors - and visitors stay away. Brianna Concannon's bed-and-breakfast becomes a cold and empty place. And that's fine with Brianna. She enjoys the peace and quiet, even when icy winds howl at her window.
This year, though, she's expecting an unusual guest - mystery writer Grayson Thane - from America. A restless wanderer with a dark past, he plans to spend the cold winter alone. Yet sometimes fate has a plan of its own. Sometimes a fire can be born in ice . . .
Fiacre Douglas characterizes the icy, beautiful Brianna Concannon, recently jilted, with subtle nuances and tonal shading mixed with a thick Irish brogue. When Brianna turns her family's home into a cozy bed-and-breakfast after her father's death and her fiancé's unexplained breakup, Douglas depicts her fears surrounding the new business with a narration rich in vocal personality. He portrays Grayson Thane, a famous mystery novelist who is Brianna's first long-term winter guest, with a subtle intimacy that captures their shared sexual tension--shared, that is, until Brianna repeatedly interrupts him when he's writing his new novel. Although Douglas's narration is good, what begins as a mystery, with clues involving lost letters and stock certificates from a nonexistent company, turns into a mediocre love story. G.D.W.
